Chances are, especially if you’ve spent time in Paleo or Keto diet communities, you’ve heard about Monk Fruit. But, chances are you’re not entirely sure what the heck it is! To be honest, I wasn’t 100% sure, myself. So, on all our behalf, I did some research!
What is Monk Fruit?
Monk Fruit looks like a small, green melon, but it’s actually a gourd! It’s grown in Southeast Asia, and was originally cultivated by Buddhist monks, hence its unique moniker.
It is often dried and used for medicinal teas, but we use its extract most often as a sweetener.
The Sweetener
Monk Fruit extract is 150 – 200 times sweeter than sugar, but has zero calories. This makes it an ideal option for those on carbohydrate-restricted diets, such as those with Diabetes, as it won’t impact blood sugar levels.
